About U3A

U3A stands for University Of The Third Age. The word 'University' is used in its original meaning of groups of people with common interests, not necessarily intellectual. Hence we have 'groups' not 'courses' and 'members' not students. No certificates or degrees are awarded. The 'Third Age' refers to the age of active retirement, usually from 55 onwards. It is a time to take charge of your own learning, to share an interest or try new activities at low cost. As a self-help organisation, U3A considers that learning should be for pleasure and that the learning activities should reflect members wishes. The widest possible range of interests involved can be educational, cultural, recreational, physical or social.

The first organisation involving learning for people no longer in full-time employment was started in France in 1972. The idea has since spread throughout the world. The first British U3A groups were started in 1982 as part of the 'Third Age Trust'. This ever expanding organisation has currently over 200,000 members in over 700 U3A's.

Local U3A groups run their own affairs, plan their own organisational structure and carry out their activities on a voluntary and unpaid basis. They are financially independent, relying on subscription income to cover their costs. Members can, if they wish, pass their own knowledge and skills on to others becoming both teachers and learners. Members can participate in as few or as many activities as they wish. The results are interesting and enjoyable experiences in a laid-back informal atmosphere with like-minded people. To find out more detail on U3A nationally visit www.u3a.org.uk.

Banbury U3A was launched in 1985 and currently has over 220 members. Apart from the activities described on this website, members receive newsletters by post or email, regular magazines - U3A News and Sources - and access to the Members Area of the National U3A website including online courses  The annual subscription is £12 a year which is renewed in January, although if you join after June it is only £6 for the rest of the year..
