San Francisco Peaks from Anderson Mesa / Mormon Lake
San Francisco Peaks from Anderson Mesa / Mormon Lake
The San Francisco Peaks, Arizona's highest mountain range, aren't really a "range" at all. They are the remnants of one volcano, which is estimated to have been 16,000 feet tall before it was nearly destroyed when it erupted laterally, much like Mt. St. Helens did in 1980. The northeastern section of the mountain, behind the high ridge shown here, was completely blown away, leaving a massive inner basin behind. Erosion and glaciation eroded the peaks into their present form. Today, the high summits of the peaks (Humphreys is 12,633 feet) are home to one of the only alpine tundra zones in the Southwest. For thousands of years before the first American caught sight of these mountains, at least a dozen tribes called the area home. Many of these tribes consider the mountains sacred; among them are the Navajo, Hopi, Hualapai, Havasupai, and five Apache nations. The first Europeans to settle in the area were Franciscan friars that founded a mission among the Hopi tribe in 1629. They named the peaks for Saint Francis, more than a century before the City of San Francisco was founded. After the railroad arrived in the late 1880's, Flagstaff was founded.
Urriellu Peak
Urriellu Peak
This picture is taken from Asiego, Asturias, Spain, from the "Pedro Udaondo viewpoint". Here you can see one of the most spectacular views of the Picos de Europa Mountains, and specially of its most famous peak, the Urriellu Peak, also know as Naranjo de Bulnes. This mountain is one of the most stunning and emblematic ones all around Europe, due to its beauty and the difficulty of climbing it. Hope you like this view, dear friends. This picture was taken yesterday, and processed today, using Aperture for the first time (I received my first iMac last week). This picture was taken with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II and Canon EF 70-200 mm f.2,8 IS L II USM lens. © All rights reserved. Please, do not use this picture without my written permission.
