State law changes
Students must achieve an 80% or better in both the written and driving portion of drivers training.  Permits will have a pass or fail on them instead of a letter grade.

I asked about next year and how the summer session would be affected.  I have cut and pasted a reply from Melissa Daniels who has been my primary source for information in the BMV.  It looks like I could run things as usual next year.  There may be some July birthday students that I need to ask a couple more questions about.

If the student is not issued a license prior to July 1, 2010 they will be required to be 16 years and 180 days to be issued the license after successfully completing driver education. If they fail driver education they will have to apply for a new permit and be 16 years and 270 days old to apply for the license.

Anyone that registers for driver education after July 1, 2010 will be required to be 15 years and 180 days old before the course starts.

Driving Contract
The attachment named "Contract with Character for a car" below is a list of things I found in a book for fathers.  I thought it might give you some ideas about how to set up guidelines for you child.  Many of the suggestions may be more strict than some of you might think needed but it is good for some discussion.

This is a good site for additional information on student drivers.
