our first time ever to go to Berts this is their homemade chicken fried steak....under that mega pile of homemade SPICY gravy....I failed to ask for the gravy on the side and paid all day.....it was wayyyyy spicy and my tummy was not happy for about 3 hours....heart burn, pain and discomfort....they use something in the gravy that gives it a red speckled cast but it is not chili flakes i suspect hot sauce not for me again next time the spinach eggs benedict with homemade hollandaise We are ernie's people.....so this felt like dissention in the ranks, but i wanted to try berts, another diner institution across the street from ernies , it used to be ernies until ernies expanded and moved, then franks moved in and was renamed berts at some point....they have all the old franks recipes ( over a 30 year tahoe institution!) the eggs were weird....light frothy not like normal eggs....the steak part was excellent....emerson ate 1/2 of it! and he loved the potatoes, they have tomatoes in them......he even told me the eggs were weird (I never said a thing) and that he likes ernies better their iced tea was excellent! the service was not as friendly as ernies and it felt like stepping back in time to a 1970s diner......which can be good, but in some respects not good.....the disposable packets of cream annoyed me to see, seems wasteful and their jelly is this awful corn syrup laden packet.......we will go back but i do not foresee us being regulars...we are after all ernies people
