Yesterday we went to the county fair. Hubby had gotten a free tkt from opening an account in a local bank. I was a bit uneasy b/c I knew that animals are taken there to be sold. I overheard the loud auction going on from the outside of the gates. But after a brief consideration with DH I decided that I should see this at least once, and never again. Let's face it, these state fairs are, to someone like me, not a good thing. The animals lay there exhausted from the heat, in a super noisy environment, away from their normal surroundings and going somewhere else, with new people, and never again to see their buddies where they came from. No one knows what's gonna happen to them after the fair. For the pigs, it's certain death. So, I paid my share to get in, an expensive $9. I went straight to the auction building, cuz I was craving seeing some critters. I got in through the pigs and goats area, and it was very sad to see the pigs laying there, overweight and exhausted, breathing really fast; most unable to get up. Then this little goat caught my attention. He was the highlight of my visit and I still wish he could have come home with me. It was a baby, with beautiful colors, amazing, trippy eyes, and SO much love to give! He had a great personality! He kept trying to nibble on my fingers and nose. There was also a chicken who wouldn't stop talking! Later I came back to see her and she had laid an egg. Another memory I can't wipe out was the amount of people eating corn dogs. If you don't know what they are, consider yourself lucky. DH said it tastes like hot dog wrapped in corn bread. I tried visualizing that taste and, yeah, I can see how it would make meat eaters go crazy. People couldn't get enough of them, slobbered with mustard and catsup. Kudos to DH for resisting the urge to eat one. Please help end the exploitation of animals on Earth - GO VEGAN! It's easier than you think, you will be healthier and you won't ever feel guilty for supporting animal abuse and suffering! Recipe to follow later. made with ground turkey *Fry about 4Tbls. of finely chopped sweet onion, with roughly 1 tbls..olive oil or other *saute till soft, add ground turkey (1 pkg. from the store) *Cook meat and chop while cooking, I use the end of a flipper. (no not a dolphin) Cook on low to medium heat. *Add a few dashes of Worcestershire Sauce *while meat is cooking, peel 2 large potatoes chop small bit size and add to meat mixture with 1 cup of Chicken Broth (I use OXO packets, with boiling water) *peel and cut in small slices carrots or add frozen corn with potatoes. add about 3/4 cup of frozen peas. as well. *simmer low, with lid just slighting off top of pot. keep an eye on it. *when vegtables are cooked,turn on low. *mix 1tbls. corn starch with small amount of cold water,enough to make it runny .just till dissolved in a mug * on low heat, add and stir in corn starch mixture. stir till thickened just slightly PASTRY: *use any kind you like. I have been using a recipe from a old Harrowsmith Book its a flan recipe *Mix 2 cups of Flour, with 1/2 teas. salt. *add 3/4 cup of margarine or butter, mix with fork till crumbly *add 2 Tblsp. vinegar. this makes enough for 2 crusts mix till elastic like in fingers. if too dry add a touch of water *Roll out on floured surface, or I roll onto parchment paper with a bit of flour. this makes it easier to put on pie plate. *put on first pastry layer,let hang over edges. pour in turkey meat mixture and put on top layer of pastry. *mix egg with fork with touch of water. brush on pastry before baking *Bake 400 F. for 10 minutes, turn down to 350 F for approximately 20 minutes till brown. enjoy
