faded america
Once upon a time ago, before terms like "franchising, chain store, strip mall, corporate consolidation" ever existed, anyone could open their own motel, become their own boss and make an honest profit the American way because Motels where in big demand during the route 66 era. They served families, traveling salesman, and just about anyone who wanted to head west (and vice versa, east). Before the motel industry mushroomed on route 66, you could pitch a tent just about anywhere on route 66. Often other travelers would camp next to you and everyone would look out for one another. Then KOA type campgrounds went into business and for a small fee you had safety, a place, to cook, and shower. But with the Motel, you had the comfort of your own living room to anywhere along route 66, a Perfect partnership for the businessman and traveler.
