Animal species diversity article (biodiversity keystone species article below)

Assignment
  1. define key terms, as you read make a list of new words you need to define (at least 10)
  2. read and bullet point main conclusions
  3. read each section, then stop and summarize each in 3 sentences

  6. meet with a buddy and go through the paper section by section and discuss each

Habitat Heterogeneity hypothesis- assumes that structurally complex habitats may provide more niches and diverse ways of exploiting the environmental resources and thus increase species diversity

Structural Diversity- physical structure of habitat often formed by plants (trees etc)

structural heterogeneity- composed of parts of different kinds, or having widely dissimilar elements.

foliage height diversity- Different heights of trees, shrubs etc.

species richness- the number of different species in a given area

biodiversity- the diversity of plant and animal life in a particular habitat

spatial scale- organisms are neither distributed uniformly or at random, forming instead some sort of spatial pattern. This is due to various energy inputs, disturbances, and species interactions that result in spatially patchy structures or gradients. This spatial variance in the environment creates diversity in communities of organisms, as well as in the variety of the observed biological and ecological events. The type of spatial arrangement present may suggest certain interactions within and between species, such as competition, predation, and reproduction.

habitat fragmentation- The process by which isolated patches of habitat are created through land clearing and deforestation
