The BA&D and the Drop Out Rate in US Schools

posted ‎‎Oct 30, 2008 4:07 AM‎‎ by ben capozzi

Anyone else catch this article in USA Today about new guidelines from the Secretary of Education?

The challenge to create a program that draws and retains students - many of whom are our most at risk - must be met.  I think the "bullpen" on the ground floor of the ATW will be a real magnet for students.  We should remember that we're building something in the ATW like nothing else in the area.

Artist Resource List Available

posted ‎‎Oct 17, 2008 4:27 AM‎‎ by ben capozzi

In preparation for my speaking engagement at Virginia Tech Thursday night, I prepared a short list of artist resources - from magazines you should be reading to seminal books and online opportunities - for aspiring creative professionals.  I've posted the list as both a webpage and a PDF for download in the File Cabinet.  It's by no means exhaustive, nor is it definitive, but it is a jumping off point, so feel free to check it out, and I invite other creative professionals to contribute to the document.

Thursday night, BA&D Digital Art & Design coordinator Ben Capozzi will be speaking at his alma mater in Blacksburg, VA.  Ben has been invited to address the Professional Practices class at Virginia Tech's School of Visual Arts and will be speaking about his experience as an undergraduate of that school's studio art program, and subsequent work as a freelance designer, brand consultant, comic book publisher, multimedia educator, and now his involvement in the Business of Art & Design program underway at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center.

HEC Open House and the BA&D

posted ‎‎Oct 15, 2008 3:20 PM‎‎ by ben capozzi

Everyone agrees that Monday's Open House at the HEC was a great success for all participants, from our college partner exhibitors to our attending student body.  In particular, the BA&D program seems to have generated some interest.  I've had a few requests from students who picked up our brochure, and I'm hopeful they'll be in our classroom in the spring whether it be in a for-credit class through DCC, an Adobe or Apple certification class, or simply an after school program for young learners.  So much to be excited about!

Hello!

If you're reading this, then somehow someone has been driven to our website!  Welcome!

What is this site?  Well, this is an experimental collaboration between those of us developing the Business of Art & Design program at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center in South Boston Virginia and, well, you!  We're hard at work developing a curriculum for a two-year Associate's Degree program in Southside Virginia and we want to share our efforts as well as invite new participants to join us.

This page is for students in both K-12 and Higher Education, faculty and instructors from the same, those concerned with Southside's economic development, artists, craftsmen, businesspersons...the list goes on and on.  If you're interested in what we're doing here, please read, comment, and get in touch.  We'd love to hear from you.
