Valve Sizing

valve sizing
    sizing
  • Estimate or measure something's dimensions
  • Form an estimate or rough judgment of someone or something
  • (sized) having a specified size
  • Alter or sort in terms of size or according to size
  • size: any glutinous material used to fill pores in surfaces or to stiffen fabrics; "size gives body to a fabric"
  • (sized) having the surface treated or coated with sizing
    valve
  • A device for controlling the passage of fluid through a pipe or duct, esp. an automatic device allowing movement in one direction only
  • a structure in a hollow organ (like the heart) with a flap to insure one-way flow of fluid through it
  • A cylindrical mechanism in a brass instrument that, when depressed or turned, admits air into different sections of tubing and so extends the range of available notes
  • A membranous fold in a hollow organ or tubular structure, such as a blood vessel or the digestive tract, that maintains the flow of the contents in one direction by closing in response to any pressure from reverse flow
  • device in a brass wind instrument for varying the length of the air column to alter the pitch of a tone
  • control consisting of a mechanical device for controlling the flow of a fluid

Russian Submarine U480 Zeebrugge, Belgium Artistic value: low. See previous images for the exterior (tower). This wall of valves just totally amazed me at just how rudimentary this ship was, but still able to swim and navigate underwater with a crew of 75. Of course there is method in the madness (which is the real beauty of it)--apparently the shapes/sizes of the wheels differ so that their function can be read in the dark. They also sound different when hit with a metal object. That is the captain's chair in the back (he also had his own toilet which a few priviledged others were also allowed to use. It was a clear sign of who is who on the ship--who did there business where).
Valve spring compresser
Valve spring compresser
No off the shelf tools were available to use as valve spring compressors, none that would fit anyway. The area inside the head and the tiny size of the valves forced me to come up with this. You can't really see it in this photo, but on the bottom left is a hole that fits over a cam retaining stud. I loosely threaded on a nut to hold the lever. Thats a 22mm socket welded to the bottom of the bar. It's used to hold the primary spring keeper removing tool seen in the next photo. The upper bar is used for leverage to compress the spring.
