dunkeld walk 4 by jennifer forrest fine art textiles duncan of jordanstone art college dundee This is how Jennifer describes her work: "My work all starts from taking walks in rural locations and recording the sounds during that process with a dictaphone. After I've finished the walk I listen back to the recording and draw, with pen and ink, responsive marks to the sounds that I hear. I've so far been breaking these sounds into Steps, Wind and Bird Calls meaning that the finished drawings have 3 parts to them. The piece that you bought is from a walk that myself and my mum took in Dunkeld so the embossed marks are the step sounds of my mum and the laser engraved marks are the step sounds that I made. When I've been moving my drawings on to create something different I've been using handmade papers and also handmaking some myself while experimenting with trying new colours of paper. I found that hand embossing the marks created in my initial drawings has been a successful way to translate the delicacy of some of the sounds and retain some of the expressive qualities in the marks. The laser engraving was an excellent technique for letting go of some of the control while seeing how far I could manipulate the papers and the result I found very beautiful especially on the piece you now have, where the paper is burnt so far but while still leaving small areas raised. The techniques I chose to use were also to be inkeeping with a lot of the research that I had done concerning the natural environment. There was a strong feeling of revealing something while on, recording and then drawing from the walks. While the sounds are obviously heard while on the walk, it is when they are drawn that you realise their compositional value and appreciate them much more which in turn makes you treasure that walk which you took as after the recording has gone it is only the drawings which remain."
