Sunrise Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco
Sunrise Palace of Fine Arts - San Francisco
This San Francisco landmark was designed by Bernard Maybeck to be part of the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition. The Palace of Fine Arts is one of the only remaining structures from that event. The building falling into disrepair was restored in the 60's and is one of the most popular sites in San Francisco today. Home to the Exploratorium, the Palace of Fine Arts central dome is surrounded by graceful columns and lagoon. The lagoon was intended to echo those found in classical settings in Europe, where the expanse of water provides a mirror surface to reflect the grand buildings and an undisturbed vista to appreciate them from a distance. The dome is currently undergoing seismic retrofit and is shown in this picture surrounded by scaffolding. I recommend you view this image large. The image was captured at sunrise and is an HDR Panorama consisting of 32 images tone mapped and stitched in to the current 180 degree panoramic view showing the entire lagoon surrounding the main structure.
