Car seat weight requirements. Graco car seats instructions. Car Seat Weight Requirements
Early birthday present We turned the carseat around today. I'd been planning on doing it for her second birthday, but caved to peer pressure and a tall baby girl. Why so long, you ask? Don't most people do it at birthday number one? Well, yes, here in the US, but I'm of the mind that it's primarily done for the convenience of the parents, at that point. Many other industrialized nations do it much later... The American Association of Pediatrics changed their recommendation recently, to keep car seats rear-facing until the child reaches either the maximum height or weight requirement of the seat, for rear-facing installations, which usually works out to be around or after two years of age (stated on the web site brief as "As log as possible"). Why the change? Well, the same reason they've always recommended it for infants - a horrible phenomenon technically referred to a internal decapitation. It's pretty much what you think it is, and it's what happens in a forward-facing sudden stop (read: impact) when the neck muscles aren't strong enough to manage the strain/trauma. There's no evidence that the neck is suddenly strong enough at one year, and indeed, some evidence to the contrary - hence the change in AAP recommendations. One of the few processed pictures you'll see on my stream, this was a magenta-y mess for some reason, rescued and processed by my wonderful wife, into black and white. Spun Around
Kai is now well above the weight requirement to face forward in his car seat. So we decided to turn him around so that he could enjoy the scenery as well. So far it's working out well, the back if his eyelids are picturesque :) See also: baby tub seat 4 seat bikes baby car seat law child booster seat table infant car seat carriers toddler booster seats car seat safety board aftermarket truck seats |
