Whitby Abbey ruins, Yorkshire, England The remains of this Benedictine abbey built 1078 and destroyed five hundred year later by Henry VIII, survive on the site of the original foundation by St Hilda 657, which was itself destroyed by the Danes 867. Capt Cook's ship Resolution was built in Whitby, where he had served his apprenticeship, and he sailed from here on his voyage to the Pacific Ocean 1768; the Captain Cook Memorial Museum is here. Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897) was set here and the Victorian novelist, Anne Bronte, is buried in the churchyard.
