Why do zebras have stripes?

Most theories regarding zebras’ unique striping revolve around camouflage and defence and the most popular is that predators without colour vision will find zebras visually difficult to isolate when they are bunched in a group. Another is that the stripes make it easier for individuals to see one another in poor or hazy conditions such as when they would flee in dust or at night. However, according to Trevor Carnaby (see below), zebra behaviour does not support these theories as zebra prefer an open habitat, where grass is often short, and where they are conspicuous, and in addition they are quite noisy and do not attempt to be inconspicuous. If the stripes are such a perfect camouflage, Carnaby wants to know, why don’t other animals have similar patterns? He mentions one very interesting fact that has become apparent in research. There is a greater concentration of capillaries below the black stripes than the white stripes, the function which is thought to be an aid in dissipating heat. The black stripes get hotter than the white, resulting in a lower pressure above these stripes than the white stripes. This pressure gradient causes cooler air to flow from the white to the black stripes and these cool “winds” help to cool the blood and to dissipate heat from the black stripes.
