Chinese Mahjong Notes
Wandering through the hutong alleys beside the Drum Tower in Beijing, I came upon a small community square where several games of mahjong were in progress. As I observed the games, I realised that they played with a different set of rules from the ones I am used to. Too shy to ask what the specific differences were, I watched and made notes. I was also fascinated by the mahjong table cloth covers that were in use. It is basically a square cloth with pockets in the corners. Toss this over any round table, and hey presto, instant mahjong table with pockets for your cash/chips. Genius.
Changing the table
After we had poured tea, we determined that there weren't enough place settings. The way to add room for more seats at a Chinese round-table restaurant is that they just switch out the round top for a larger one. Three waiters lifted the first table round, 2 more slipped a larger circle underneath it. Then they set down the smaller wooden round, two waiters gripped the edges of the table cloth, and the other waiters briskly pulled out the first round. Only a few tea cups toppled, and within 2 minutes, our table had been enlarged. Not bad.
