Eric is in Nepal!

posted 15 Mar 2010 06:26 by Lana Vanderlee   [ updated 15 Mar 2010 06:35 ]

Namaste! We are happy to announce that Eric and all the equipment we had donated has made it safe and sound to Nepal! There was a small hold-up in customs overnight, but the equipment has now made it safely to the International Friendship Children's Hospital! We are extremely excited about this update!

Eric was greeted by a group of friends at the airport, as well as Dr. Shakya, director of IFCH. Eric reports that he is "...very impressed with the International Friendship Children's Hospital - with many clients lining the doors for good consultations.  Many challenging things to report, but people are trying hard here to make things works. It was also nice to see my buddy's donated head-lamp still in use for oral exams."

We will continue to update on the progress of Eric's project. If you would like to read his tales of travel, you can visit his personal blog site at www.gofishyfishy-nepal.blogspot.com

IDEAS 2010 - Feb 20 Update

posted 20 Feb 2010 11:53 by Eric Cheng   [ updated 20 Feb 2010 12:06 ]

Trip planning is ongoing process.

Logistics and admin is a ton of work but very rewarding too to see all the donations and financial support coming in. We are currently sitting at over $3000 in donations for BABU so far - full breakdown of how this is used will be published online once final tallys come in and the needs are assessed. So far, we're committed to completing payments for the dental chair at IFCH's. Equipment donation has been extremely generous with 3 fully outfitted infant flow drivers + generators, etc. See donated equipment for list of all donated products. We've also had confirmation from Cathay Pacific to take 10checkins at no additional cost.

We also have a new hospital to donate to in Tansen, Palpa, Nepal. We have also collected some research equipment for the the Environment and Public Health Organization. http://www.enpho.org/

Eric is finding that logistics planning and coordination is very close to a FT job, so presentation building has been slow, but steady.  Updates will hopefully be done on a weekly basis.

2 infant flows in...

So talked with biomed guy today to figure out the power configurations and turns out it was goign to be a bit troublesome with having to get a isolation transformer after a stepdown unit for 220-110V to run the device.

BUT low and behold, today the Gumbo Medical shipment came in, and the 2 units they sent look to be in pretty decent shape AND they both came with medical grade power supplies that accept upto 250V and 8A!!!! So good!!!!

So encouraged! Lots of work still ahead with getting the equipment serviced and lectures ready for Nepal...

We wish to also thank Gumbo Medical (http://www.gumbomedical.com/) for their willingness to sell 2 used Infant Flow drivers at a dep discount. Testing to still be done on this product.

We wish to also thank Fisher & Paykel (http://www.fphcare.com/) for their generous donation of 1 humidifier pot and hopefully more to come!

Hey guys,

It was great meeting with everyone over the past week. Just wanted to let you all know that the application is signed, sealed and delivered (well in the mail anyway). Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope this process goes smoothly.

Application Status

As you guys know, we're currently working on our application for the Canadian Revenue Agency to become a registered charity. I'll post the documents for our application on the site so that we all have a chance to collaborate. We've recently chatted with our lawyer friend who will be altering the written agreement. We'll have the changes ready by the time we fly back to Ontario. I know this stuff is really tedious, so thank you for putting up with our harassing e-mails.
