Autumn Bridge Weekend

AVONSIDE BRIDGE WEEKEND, OCTOBER 12th~14th, 2012.

The Bridge Weekend will be at the Walton Park Hotel in Clevedon, some 35/40 miles away, depending on your route.

Originally built in the latter part of the 19th century, the 3* Best Western Walton Park Hotel has been restored to its former glory & thoroughly modernised throughout.  Charmingly nestled in two acres of landscaped gardens standing proudly in a stunny cliff top location, the hotel affords superb views overlooking the Severn Estuary and the Welsh Hills.

There is a drop-off point right outside the front door (no steps) and the car park is straight ahead down a slope and is reasonably spacious ~ no undercover. The room they intend us to use as the Bridge room is to the immediate left of the Reception area ~ currently it is being used as a lounge but they would convert it for us and it would be “ours” for the weekend. It is a large light room with a high ceiling ~ no air conditioning ~ but windows can be opened if needs be. The outlook is across the Severn Estuary as it is from the dining room. They do not have Bridge tables but are going to hire them from somewhere at no extra charge.

The Somerset Restaurant adjoins this potential Bridge room and it would be halved by a screen drawn across in the middle to give us “our” area and we would be able to move straight into the Bridge room via connecting French doors. Sample menus show a good choice for both Dinner and Sunday lunch but I don’t know what the food is like.

At the end of the evening, members would be able to cross the corridor to a lift almost directly opposite, this lift going between the ground floor and the 2 levels of bedrooms. On the first floor, there would be 4/5 easy steps to some bedrooms ~ the bedrooms vary in size and all beds are either double or twin (can be zipped together or unzipped).  All 40 bedrooms ~ quite a few of which overlook the River (but not all) ~ have been individually designed and furnished to a very high standard ~ in addition, all have en suite bathrooms and are fully equipped to a very high standard.

The hotel is ideally situated for members to venture into nearby Bristol or to explore the local tourist attractions including Cheddar Gorge, Wookey Hole Caves, the scenic Wye Valley and the beaches of Weston. Alternatively, members can stay closer to home to promenade the full length of Clevedon’s fully restored pier or visit Clevedon Court Manor House where William Makepeace Thackeray wrote much of Vanity Fair. Clevedon itself is interesting to spend time investigating the local shops, both in Hill Road and down in the Triangle. There are bus stops near the hotel but that’s as much as I know at the moment.
