Masons' Red Owl store, Green Bay, WI
A few weeks ago, I finally paid a visit to Mason Brothers' Red Owl store in Green Bay, Wisconsin...supposedly the second-to-last grocery store in existence still bearing the Red Owl name. Red Owl was for much of the 20th century one of the most prominent grocery chains in the upper midwest; supplying independent operators working under a franchise system. The assets of Red Owl (including their Green Bay, WI distribution facility, located nearby) were acquired by Supervalu in 1988, and most stores closed or were converted to other concepts shortly thereafter. The store itself was a downright amazing artifact, dating to 1938 and featuring all of two checkout lines inside. I had never been inside a supermarket quite as small...or as charming...as this one before.

This building adheres very closely to the appearance of supermarkets in the early postwar era at its most stereotypical: Streetwise alignment, downtown location, corner entrance, big display windows. The front of the building is actually covered by glazed brick: Not that it looks like much from across the street, but they let off a characteristic sheen up close. Regardless of what name it originally did business as (I'm willing to guess it was an independent franchise like Red Owl instead of a big chain), Green Bay assessment records reveal that the store was built in 1953 and did business as an IGA as late as the mid 1990s.
