Kelly's Directory of Oxford (day 228 of 365) Kelly's Street Directories were published for most towns and cities in the UK until 1976. (The last Kelly's Street Directories for Oxford, Nottingham and Leeds (at any rate) stop in 1976.) The directories have three distinct sections. The first is the one that I use the most. This lists every street. Within every street it lists the numbers and key buildings and against each one the name of the Head of the Household or the name of the business is listed. The second section lists different types of trade and business by category. This permits you to find out say where every Haberdashers in the City traded from. The final section is the list of private residences. This only records the names of the Heads of Household. The 1966 Street Directory is the last one to list St Paul's Church on Walton Street as a place of worship. St Paul's Parish was created out of St Giles's and St Thomas's Parishes in 1837. In 1869 the parish was reduced in size when St Barnabas opened. In 1963 Saints Barnabas and Paul Parishes were amalgamated. In 1969 St Paul's officially disappeared as a place of worship. By 1973 the building stood derelict. In 1988 the old St Paul's Church found new life as Freud's. It remains as Freud's to this day. 25 Shillings (or ?1/5s) in 1966 is the equivalent of ?17.40 in 2008 using retail prices. Using Per Capita GDP it equates to ?42.20 in 2008. (Per capita GDP apparently gives a better idea of affordability.) If this book cost ?42.20 in terms of 'affordability' then I can maybe see why they eventually ceased to be printed. Beef Soup
When I was not feeling well, I went out and bought the best soup around, the homemade soup from Trade Fair on 30th Avenue and 30th Street. You have to have some luck to get their soup. They don't make much and they run out early. Trade Fair makes only one soup per day, too, either chicken, beef, or seafood. They make the seafood soup only on Fridays. I managed to find it once. It's not good for me in terms of cholesterol, but it was good for my stomach and spirit. Of course, I took photos. Everyone like to see pictures of food. Photos have no calories, no cholesterol, no saturated fats. They're healthy!
