181 Benz Patent Motor Car 1 (Replica) *(1885-86) * Benz Patent Motor Car No.1 (1995-86) Engine 954cc Single Cylinder Production 3 The original was the first motor carriage developed by Karl Benz in his workshops at Mannheim. Originally designed and manufactured as a gas engine by Benz, but he also experimented with an ignition system and combustible fuels and so he developed this four stroke single cylinder engine. This was coupled with belt drive to a drum under the seat, and chain drive to the wheels. The same drum also had contracting brake shoes fitted, both operations being controlled by a single lever. Fuel vapour was supplied to the engine via a surface carburettor, the copper tank to the lower left of the engine. Valuable publicity followed after the intrepid drive of his wife Bertha Benz in 1886 with their children from Mannheim via Heidelberg to her mothers home in Pforzheim a journey of some 70 kilometers. These cars are two examples of the very accurate replica built to commemorate the centenary of that journey, the cars were built between 1986-97 by John Bentley Engineering of Yorkshire, Mercedes were so impressed that they purchased the entire final batch for display and commemorative runs.
