Forms: Providing hints when a field has focus
Forms: Providing hints when a field has focus
This form (Google checkout account creation) displays format hints when the form field has focus. That is, the hint appears only when a person moves the cursor to a particular field. This may be a good approach for reducing clutter on the screen and drawing the visitor's attention to the formatting 'rule,' helping them to avoid errors. Hints are also used to help the visitor understand what kind of information is requested. There is a trade-off in reducing screen clutter by hiding all hints except for the current field: On a complex form hints are useful to distinguish the difference between kinds of information that are being requested. Hiding hints relies either on the visitor's short-term memory or requires them to pogo-stick between form fields in order to compare hints. Short-term memory is a problem for a large percentage of people: many people who are aging, multi-tasking, or have learning disabilities. Depending on the technical implementation, the information may not be available at all to people who are listening with a screen reader or viewing a translated version of the page. Hiding hints that describe formatting, such as a mailing address, may be an efficient approach. Hiding hints on something like a mortgage or school application may result in more visitor effort as the person jumps back and forth between fields to use the hints to comprehend the questions being asked than the cognitive load required when all hints are displayed at once. When deciding whether to use this approach on a particular form, it would be useful to observe how much jumping back-and-forth people need to do in order to use hint information successfully.

I was pulling pictures to update my address book and i started a collage on my desktop. this is a capture of it. fun, huh? top L is a lot of capoeira ppl and top R is a lot of PA school friends. In the middle are a lot of random Jersey friends and then my family. I forgot I had a picture of my brother blowing fire. The bottom consists of buffalo/ohio friends. Ive made out with 7 of them. Ive worked with 5 of them. Ive done drugs with 11 of them. Ive gotten drunk with 57 of them. Ive gotten drunk in another country with 4 of them. 1 of them has felt my liver. Only 2 have seen me cry (not from laughter). I slapped 1 in the face. Ive thrown a preying mantis at 1 of them. only 1 of them made me want to end my life. about 40 of them gave me reasons to live life. i have started a mosh pit with on a moving boat with 1 of them. 1 threw me out the house when i was 17 years old. Another gave me his shirt of his back and the money in his pockets when i got tossed. All of them in some shape or form have changed my life.
