House number 18 in Irlach

Identified in 1996 by Georg Ederer of Waldmünchen. The house name was Sigl. In 1996, the Roith family lived there. This house was made from stones, and because of this, the rooms would be cold inside. Homes usually had only one oven for heating, this oven was in the kitchen. The other rooms would be cold and damp.

Emigration - 1885
Margaretha Vogl Pfeiffer's sister, Theresia Vogl, was married to Thomas Schwartz on March 4, 1867 in Tiefenbach, Kreis Cham, Bavaria, Germany. Sometime before 1870, the Schwartz family immigrated to America. They lived on a farm in Wilson Creek, Sauk County, Wisconsin.

In late 1884, Margaretha Vogl Pfeiffer received word of the death of her sister Theresia who died on October 26, 1884, about two months after the birth of Theresia's tenth child. The child also died, a month after her mother. The ages of the eight remaining living children ranged from one to sixteen years. The family lore is that Michael and Margaretha Vogl Pfeiffer and family decided to go to America to help take care of the Schwartz children. On August 9, 1886, Thomas Schwartz married a second time, to Margaret Mick, and they had nine children.

On May 22, 1885, Michael (age 52), his wife Margaretha (age 56) and their daughters, Catherine (age 18), Theresia (age 14), twins Barbara and Margaret (age 11) left their home at house number 18 in Irlach, Germany. They traveled two days by train to Bremen. On May 24, 1885, they boarded the steamer S.S. Fulda for the 13-day voyage to America. The Pfeiffer family arrived at Castle Garden, New York, on June 6, 1885. The cost of the voyage was 1600 Marks.

They traveled with a large wooden trunk. The following is the remaining legible routing information that was glued to the outside of the trunk:

von Lichtenfe[ls] 19 nach [B]remen [handwriting, illegible]. __lda. Zu__end__6.

This means that the trunk traveled to Lichtenfels, probably to the train station. From Lichtenfels the trunk went to Bremen. [There were train stations nearer to Irlach, so it is unknown why the trunk went to Lichtenfels.]

Wisconsin
From New York, the Pfeiffer family traveled by train to Spring Green, Sauk County, Wisconsin. They went first to the Thomas Schwartz farm in Wilson Creek. One month later, in July 1885, Michael Pfeiffer purchased 120 acres in Section 27 of Spring Green Township in Sauk County. The land is located on what is known as Butternut Road in 2009.

The
log house was used as a storage shed by Herman Ringelstetter from about 1919 to 1945 when Herman owned the farm next door and the former Pfeiffer property. This picture was probably taken in the 1930s to 1940s. Lawrence Ringelstetter (son of Herman) said there were more buildings on the Pfeiffer land: a small barn, a horse barn, and wooden water pipes. The large opening in the log house was made so that farm machinery could be placed inside for storage.

Weekly Home News, Spring Green, Wisconsin: October 15, 1885, page 2, col 3:
"An aged lady named Pfefer was brought to town from Wilson Creek to have a broken wrist attended to; one day last week. Dr. Stair reduced the fracture. The injury was the result of the lady's falling from a load of hay."

Weekly Home News, Oct. 15, 1931, page 1, col. 3:
"Taken from the files of Oct. 15, 1885: Mrs. Pfiefer of Wilson Creek fell from a load of hay and broke a wrist."

Note that the "aged lady" was age 56!

Memories of the Pfeiffer family
As told by Michael Pfeiffer's daughter, Margaret Pfeiffer Ringelstetter, to her son Leo Ringelstetter (regarding the Pfeiffer family): They left Germany May 24, 1885 to immigrate to United States. Arrived June 9, 1885 to Spring Green. Two days by train to Bremen; nine days to New York. Steamer Fulda. 1600 Marks. By train to Spring Green. Thomas Schwartz took them in on farm in Wilson Creek. Michael was a farmer, musician and weaver. He worked on railroad construction first in Bavaria. Bought Mike Rieder farm 3 months later, took possession Aug. 1885 for $2400. Farm in Upper Wilson Creek, Town of Spring Green, Wisconsin. Sold to son-in-law Mike Ringelstetter for $8000 about 1915. Margaret [Pfeiffer] married Michael Ringelstetter, May 7, 1903 at Plain. [Michael Ringelstetter] bought Henry Frank farm next to Pfeiffer homestead $5500 Oct. 1903. Bought [Pfeiffer] homestead about 1915. Sold both to Herman J. Ringelstetter, April 1919.

As told by Anne Kraemer Frank (age 97) on April 28, 1996:
Anne remembered Michael Pfeiffer very well and recalled that Michael took his two big white horses to town to get a keg of beer. Michael buried the beer keg in the ground to keep the beer cool. Michael was a saxaphone player. Anne's brother wanted to buy the saxaphone, but Michael did not sell it.

As told by Gisela Frank Kraemer (Mrs. Edward Kraemer) (age 102) on June 19, 1996:
Gisela Frank was born in Upper Wilson Creek. The Frank home is across the hill from the Herman Ringelstetter - Mike Pfeiffer farm. The Frank home is located on Wilson Creek Rd. A lady named Pfeiffer died in a log house. When Mrs. Pfeiffer died, the wake was at the Pfeiffer log house. From the house they went by horse and buggy up to Plain to church with the funeral procession. There was no hearse in those days. They used a milk wagon. When asked if Gisela knew Mike Pfeiffer, she said she not recognize the name Mike. She just knew him as Pfeiffer. They called people by their last name. Mr. Pfeiffer was in the army in Germany; he liked music. Joseph Nachreiner had an accordion. Mr. Pfeiffer played Joseph's accordion. The Pfeiffers walked to church at Plain. They walked over the hill by Laubmeiers, it must've been a mile. Then from there they went up where Haas' live.

As told by Anton Blau (age 73) of Plain, Wisconsin on November 6, 1977:
"Well anyhow, this Mike Pfeiffer, he was Mike Ringelstetter's dad [correction: father-in-law], and he stayed with Mike on the farm. And as I remember, I was just a kid, the story goes:  He couldn't understand English and the salesman said to Mike, "Hello, Mr. Pfeiffer."  Mr. Pfeiffer said in German, "Ya da meestdee bean y'all da va" [spelled how Anton said it].  That meant: He was the barn cleaner all the time. [Anton chuckles] One didn't know what the other one said. I jist can barely remember him. If it wouldn't be for that story, I probably wouldn't."

Stained-glass window
In 1900, Michael and Margaretha Pfeiffer donated a stained glass window for the newly-built St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church located on North Washington Street in Spring Green. The names "Michael & Margaretha Pfeifer" were inscribed on the window. The location of the window was in the southwest corner of the building. When entering through the main entrance doors, it was the first window on the right, on the long side of the building. On March 2, 1988, a fire destroyed the church, including the Pfeiffer window.
