Introduction

ATLAS is pleased to announce that the Winter University intensive programme for 2010 will be held in Portorose, Slovenia. The event will be hosted and organised by the Faculty of Tourism Studies Portorse -TURISTICA, University of Primorska, Slovenia.

The Winter University is aimed at undergraduate and master’s students in the fields of tourism, leisure and culture. The programme consists of lectures, workshops and excursions, where the emphasis is placed on interactive learning in international groups. Lecturers from universities in Poland, Romania, Austria, the Netherlands, Portugal and Slovenia will deliver the lecture programme and lead the workshops. Questions, of tourism, culture and identity will be explored through the formal programme as well as through the social programme and informal transcultural contacts between students.

Background of ATLAS WU

The ATLAS Winter University is an intensive programme which has been operating since 1989, and has been held in ten different EU Member States. The basic aim of the programme is to examine the consequences of European integration for leisure and tourism consumption and production. The network has focussed in recent years on the relationship between leisure, tourism and culture, work which is supported by an international research programme on cultural tourism, in which many partners also actively collaborate. All institutions are also members of the Association for Tourism and Leisure Education (ATLAS), a network of universities which developed from the Subject Area Network created by the ERASMUS programme (www.atlas-euro.org).

In developing the programme we have built a body of knowledge, retaining a core set of lecturers and workshop leaders who can provide a transnational and multidisciplinary approach. Learning strategies have been supported by the publication of lectures and the development of a student network on Yahoo. Intensive curriculum development between WU partners resulted in two European Masters being developed: the Programme in European Leisure Studies (PELS), and the European Programme in Urban Cultures (POLIS).

The theme for the Winter University in 2010 will be health, spa and well-being tourism, which brings well being to a local community and society and thus improve lives of many people. Well-being is a relatively recent aspect of the curriculum in most countries, and there is a lack of teaching and learning material. One of the aims of the IP will be to develop comparative case studies which can be used in each of the participating institutions after the event.

Aims and objectives

The basic aim of the WU is to examine the consequences of European integration for leisure and tourism consumption and production.

The objectives of the 2009/2010 edition will be:

•    Introduce students to key concepts in health, spa and social wellbeing brought by tourism development

•    Apply health, spa and social well-being models to their own local and national contexts

•    Confront different approaches and identify innovative solutions

•    Assess the extent of health, spa and social well-being tourism development in different EU Member States
The WU will seek to build our understanding of creative development strategies in different EU contexts, examining the effects of creative development from different disciplinary perspectives.
