As of version 3.9, AtlasAlive supports tiled base map layers (map backgrounds). As the administrator you can configure which tiled base maps you want to make available for each of your maps individually. Your users will be able to toggle between any layers you have configured for them (See Video).

Currently Available Tiled Base Maps:

OpenStreetMap: Mapnik and Osmarender (OSM). http://www.openstreetmap.org/
OpenStreetMap creates and provides free geographic data such as street maps to anyone who wants them. The project was started because most maps you think of as free actually have legal or technical restrictions on their use, holding back people from using them in creative, productive, or unexpected ways.

There is imagery for the west coast up to zoom level 18, whereas the rest of the US will be updated with imagery at these high zoom levels shortly.
