Athlone Boat Club

ATHLONE Boat Club, founded in 1836, is one of the oldest rowing clubs in Ireland and is located on Grace Road on the banks of the River Shannon in the middle of Athlone. The clubhouse itself is situated in front of the local army barracks, Custume Barracks and is a very short walk from the main town bridge. A map of the area can be found here.

Historical features on this road include a bust of Athlones most famous son, the world famed tenor John Count McCormack and the Norman era castle at the top of Grace Rd. which dates from the 1100's. The castle has survived many threats from the Siege of Athlone which was fought during the Jacobite and Wiliamite war to a threatened car park in the 1970's! A little more information on the castle can be found here.
