One of the communities I have been very active in these past couple of years is XBox Media Center.  For those of you that don't know this is a homebrew media player for the XBox that uses mplayer as a core to play pretty much any media you can throw at it.

Perhaps its most under-used feature is a python api for creating little xbmc applications typically used for parsing media from websites and presenting them to the user. 

While I have been a good programmer for years I knew next to nothing about python and XBMC gave me a fun way to practice.
