Field Museum Zoology The Department of Zoology traces its origin to when the Field Museum opened in 1893. A majority of the animal specimens come from famed taxidermist Carl Akeley, who re-invented the way museums display animals. Instead of merely stuffing the animal with straw, Akeley created a near exact skeletal structure of the animal out of wood and wire, and then added a layer of clay to shape on fat and muscle tissue. Once that was done, he would encase the animal's original skin over his creation, thus giving the exhibit a more naturalistic look. I'm not weirded out by seeing cases of stuffed animals, but to know that most of the collection is over 100 years old. Zoology library, Cambridge University

The 'Humphry' commemorated above the upper window is Professor Sir George Murray Humphry (1820-1896) an eminent surgeon and anatomist. The zoology faculty buildings were built between 1900 and 1904, the architect being Edward Schroder Prior. The buildings have recently been cleaned, but this photo was taken some years ago.
