Assessment in the Summer Series:

Working Sessions to Help Programs Develop Assessment Projects

 

2010 Application to Participate Due May 3rd

 

The Office of the Deputy Provost is hosting a series of working sessions to assist programs with the development of assessment projects.  The goal of the progressive series of five sessions is to provide teams of faculty/administrators a supportive environment in which to develop assessment projects for 2010-2011. 

 

The sessions are ideal for programs looking to develop assessment projects for an undergraduate, graduate, or professional program.  The assessment can be embedded in a course, such as a capstone or required seminar, or could be designed for implementation across courses.  Student Services and administrative units may also apply, as the project could also be geared toward assessing the effectiveness of an office, program or service.   Examples:  developing a rubric to assess a research paper in a capstone course, developing a portfolio for a master’s program, designing a senior exit survey, or assessing the impact of a new training program for academic advisors. 

 

WHO: The sessions are for teams working on an assessment project.  Up to ten teams can participate in the summer 2010 series.  The team should commit to attending all five workshops.

 

WHAT: Sessions will feature a mix of discussion and project time.  Faculty and administrators with expertise in assessment will be on-hand to answer questions and provide advice.  Depending on the proposals received, we can bring in individuals to help you with survey design, rubric development, portfolios, or other assessment areas.  Participants will also receive training on features and uses of the new Blackboard Outcomes System.

 

WHEN:  Workshops will be Wednesdays from 12:30 to 2:00 and participants are welcome to bring their lunch.  Each session will have a particular focus, but the intention is for each group to attend all five progressive workshops.

 

1)     Project—Articulating the nature and goals of the assessment project (June 9th )

2)     Goals—Aligning the assessment project with program goals (June 23rd )

3)     Assessment Instrument—Developing assessment tools (July 14th)

4)     Instrument Implementation —Refining and testing the design of the assessment tools (July 28th)

5)     Findings and Analysis— Thinking ahead to reports and uses of results (August 11th )

WHERE:  Main Campus—Tech Center

 

How to participate:  If your program has an assessment idea that needs development, or an existing tool that would benefit from improvement, please consider applying.  In order to tailor the event to meet need, and to limit the size of the group, we are requesting one-page proposals.  Up to ten teams will be invited to participate.

Have your group submit a one-page proposal that includes the following:

 

a.       Program that will be assessed (e.g. Bachelor of Arts in…, Office of…)

b.      Goals  or Objectives for the program (e.g. Student Competencies, or Administrative Goals)

c.       Brief overview of the assessment project you would like to design

d.      Name(s) of individuals that will be attending the working sessions (If it is a large group of multiple units, please clearly identify the unit with primary responsibility.)
