Texels were developed on Texel Island, one of the Netherlands's Wadden Islands, in the early 1800's and first imported into Canada in the 1980's. Texels are prized as meat sheep due to their lean, high-yielding carcass. Texel rams are often used as terminal sires to improve meat characteristics.
