2012/05/03 - Take Back Manufacturing Talk - May 3rd, 2012

posted Apr 24, 2012 8:41 AM by Anton Dubov   [ updated May 9, 2012 6:37 PM ]

The Issue...
It’s now clear to many Canadians that it’s time to rescue our declining manufacturing industries and get everyone to work closer together to plan the recovery of our declining manufacturing sectors.

The Solution...

It’s time to Take Back Manufacturing (TBM)!

The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) is spearheading this TBM initiative and has formed a forum of broad representation of like minded Canadian technical societies, management associations, trade organizations and educational stakeholders and other interested organizations. The ultimate goal is to start working closer together to plan the recovery of the declining manufacturing sectors in Ontario. TBM is a Roadmap to recovery and defines what must be done, and what each of us can do to assist in its recovery. All engineers need to understand and support the recovery of a broad manufacturing industry base to provide a platform for sustained innovation and best in class practices, and that without such a base we will not be able to practice engineering in a competitive manner into the future.

Take Back Manufacturing is about having ONE voice and ONE agenda. More on TBM at www.sme-tbm.org

The Speaker...

Mr. Nigel Southway, C.Eng., M.Sc., BIM, Author. Mr. Southway is the author of “CYCLE TIME management”, “Fast Track To Time Based Productivity Improvement”, and “A ground breaking LEAN Thinking text book”. Nigel has more than 35 years’ broad engineering and business experience. He provides coaching and education on Business Productivity Improvement and Advanced Manufacturing Engineering to all types of business sectors and industries and helps clients develop a strategy and a vision to attack waste, capture productivity improvements, increase profits, and become more competitive in the global market. Nigel is also a senior committee member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. He is currently consulting and educating worldwide on Business Improvement Initiatives, Joint Ventures, New Product Introduction Systems and Global Technology Transfer projects.

Proposed Agenda:

Seminar: Metallurgical Failure Analysis in manufacturing

Product failures can result in costly events, poor product branding and loss of business. Determining the precise cause of component failure is critical to develop cost-effective solutions and containment strategies. The session will begin with a seminar to introduce the concepts used during metallurgical failure analysis.  Case histories will be used to demonstrate material covered.  Participants will better understand the methods applied during failure analysis and how to better utilize it within the manufacturing industry.

Tour

Following the talk, a tour of the metallurgical laboratory and demonstrations of the equipment will be provided.   Attendees will be given the opportunity to use some of the equipment to examine component failures. Steel Image has the capability to perform the following material tests: Microstructural Assessment, Weld Evaluation, Grain Size (ASTM E112), Microhardness Survey (Vickers, 100-500gf load) and SEM Examination and EDS Analysis.

BiographyShane Turcott, Principal Metallurgist, Steel Image Inc.

Shane Turcott graduated with both a B.Eng and
M.A.Sc in Materials Engineering from McMaster University.  He has performed failure analysis for the manufacturing, maintenance and energy industries through former employment at Dofasco, Bodycote and Liburdi Turbine Services.  In 2008, he started Steel Image specializing in solution-based failure analysis.  He is currently the Vice Chair of the Sourthern Ontario ASM Chapter and regularly speaks at events and conferences on failure analysis.
