Wash day
Wash day
Wash day was a part of every family's life before the invention of automatic washers. This old wringer type washing machine has been reduced to yard art. I couldn't see a brand on it, but Maytag was only one of several companies that made washers of this type. Automatic washers were actually introduced before World War II . My father bought one in 1942 and it was second hand. It was a Bendix. Actually it was almost new. The lady who sold it to him didn't really like it and we found out why. The first time it hit spin cycle it started dancing all around the kitchen. My father threw his 200 pound body on top of it and kept it under control until the spin cycle was over. The solution was to simply bolt the washer to the floor. That made the whole house tremble during spin cycle, but the washer stayed in place. Word soon spread throughout the neighborhood and a number of people came in to watch it work. It remained the only automatic in town through the war years, but when the war was over, lots of people bought one.
The Penn State Blue Band provided the musical backdrop at the "Clean Up Your Act" event held Aug. 24 at The Bryce Jordan Center on Penn State's University Park campus. Part training session, part kick-off event for a new University environmental initiative to save water, time and money by installing more than 600 Maytag Neptune washers system-wide, the event was attended by hundreds of new and returning resident assistants, community assistants and housekeeping staff.
