Sr Tessie Bezzina was brought up in Gharghur where she received her very first formation, rooted in a family in which joy, honesty and a deep psychology of the heart prevailed. This was strengthened by her early Catechism lessons and the instructions of the Catholic Action meetings under the direction of Rev Fr Karm Bezzina. She attended St Monica School and later, as an Augustinian Sister, graduated in the teaching profession. Her first ministry, in fact, was mainly as an enthusiastic biology teacher and at the same time, a dynamic and energetic vocation promoter. Subsequently, Sr Tessie taught religion, inculcating in her students a special love for the Scriptures. Her spontaneous sense of humour was definitely an asset in her classroom career.

She proceeded with her studies at the University of Malta and acquired a diploma in Theological Studies. She later followed a course at the Ateneo Salesiano in Rome, which was an asset to her role as Director of our Novices and Junior Sisters. During that same period, she was one of the founders of Centru ta' Istituti Religjuzi (CIR), an initiative to bring together all the religious in the Maltese Islands in an inter-congregational holistic formation programme. Along the years, CIR was amalgamated into INSERM, in which Sr Tessie continued to give her service. She spent around 14 years contributing to the formation of religious life in the Maltese and Gozitan Diocese. For 15 years, Sr Tessie was Provincial Councillor and during these last five years, she was the Superior of the community at St Monica, Birkirara. As Mother General, she will now reside in Rome.

The Augustinian Sisters wish Sr Tessie and her team a fruitful service in the congregation founded in 1827 by Mother Teresa Spinelli in Frosinone, Italy and later spread to Malta, England, Africa, America, Australia, India and the Philippines. May they bear witness to the spirit of St Augustine and that of their Mother Foundress, in God's honour and glory and for the service of the Church.
