Mysore style classes are open to all levels, including beginners!   Students practice independently at their own pace.  The teacher helps each individual, giving verbal guidance to those just learning the practice and mostly hands-on adjustments to those with an established practice.   The sequence is learned progressively over a period of time appropriate to each individual.  Beginners are required to commit to 10 classes or a monthly pass to initiate the practice with some momentum and ensure the development of a solid foundation.  Beginners can expect to spend between 30 to 45 minutes in the studio at first, with that time gradually increasing as more of the sequence is learned.  Self guided practice is the way to internalize your awareness and deepen your experience and understanding of yoga.   The Mysore classes are the format for dedication, devotion, and discipline to unfold with regular practice.  (The start time for  Mysore classes is open; as long as you finish your practice by the end time, you may arrive at any time.)

In the guided class, students with some Ashtanga or other vinyasa style experience are verbally guided through all or part of the traditional sequence of postures known as the Primary Series.    The class moves at a steady pace. Students develop steadiness of breath, mental focus, and core awareness during the uninterrupted flow of the postures.  This class is not appropriate for beginners.

Joan Isbell began practicing hatha yoga and kundalini yoga in the 80's and then Iyengar yoga in the early 90's.  In 1993 she took her first Ashtanga class at The Yoga Workshop and was struck by how comprehensive and complete the practice felt.   She has been practicing Ashtanga yoga since then and made her first trip to Pattabhi Jois's yoga shala in Mysore, India, in 1998.  She holds a Level 1 Authorization to teach the practice in its traditional, time tested method from the K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute.   She is ever thankful to Pattabhi Jois, Sharath Jois, Richard Freeman, Tim Miller and Annie Pace for their patience, wisdom, and joy in sharing the precious gift of this practice.
