Four Ashford 8th graders, Michael Varga, James Potter, Ron LaMonica, and Jordan Parent completed their health community service project at the school spring concert on May 25th. After two years of money raising efforts they presented to the school Fiesta , a kinetic sculpture created by Ashford artist David C. Roy.
This community service project is the citizenship piece of the character education curriculum by Martha Hardisty. It encourages students to understand the importance of giving back to their community. The boys decided on this project at the beginning of their 7th grade year and earned money by hosting many after school arts and crafts workshops for other students. The sculpture has been mounted on the wall of the main office where it can be seen and enjoyed by students, staff and parents. Congratulations to Mike, James, Ron and Jordan.

Ashford teacher, Martha Hardisty, has received the Connecticut Education Association's Mahatma Gandhi Martin Luther King Peace Award. Mrs Hardisty is being honored with this prestigious statewide award for her lifelong work teaching health classes and developing an exemplary curriculum that promotes the understanding of differences among community members and the importance of supporting one another. Her unique program begins in early elementary grades and develops until it culminates in the eighth grade with several activities that include a high ropes challenge, an overnight visit to Hole In The Wall Gang Camp, and a class called Flight. All of these activities are designed to prepare children to become responsible, understanding, and positive role models as they enter adulthood. Mrs Hardisty has been a strong advocate and a supportive leader for children for over 25 years. She will receive her award at the CEA's Summer Leadership Conference being held in August |

It is illegal to pass a stopped school bus
that has its lights flashing and the stop sign out. Just a reminder to
those of you who pick up or drop off students in the middle of the day when the
Pre-K bus is parked in front of the school. If the lights are on and the stop
sign is extended you may not pass the bus.
