Google Scholarships

Note that most fellowships listed below support PhD study but some fellowships (GEM, JPFP) are open to students pursuing MS study. A few (Google UNCF, SMART) support undergraduate study. Most of these fellowships listed below require US citizens or Permanent Residents unless specified.


Minority Oriented
  • Deadline: Nov 2, 2009 Ford Diversity Fellowship. Intended for minorities.
    • Eligibility: seniors or graduate students
    • Minimum GPA: not specified
    • Stipend: $19,000. 3 years (within a 5 year period)
  • Deadline: Nov 5, 2009 National Physical Science Consortium Graduate Fellowships in the Physical Sciences (CS falls into scope)
    • Eligibility: seniors or 1st year PhD students (emphasis on underrepresented minorities & women)
    • Minimum GPA: 3.0/4.0
    • Stipend: $21,000. 4 years
    • Note: It was originally designed for women and minorities, but they often consider white males to be minorities.
  • Deadline: Nov 15, 2009 GEM Fellowship. Intended for minorities.
    • Eligibility: MS - junior/senior undergrads; PhD - those with or pursuing an MS degree.
    • Minimum GPA: 3.0/4.0 for pursuing PhD; 2.8/4.0 for pursuing MS
    • Stipend: PhD - $14,000; MS - $10,000, PhD - 5 years; MS - 3 semesters (Tuition and fees need to be agreed to be paid by member institutions)
  • Deadline: Jan 31, 2010 AT&T Labs Fellowship Program,  Intended for minorities and women.
    • Eligibility: senior or 1st/2nd grad students
    • Minimum GPA: not specified
    • Stipend: $2380 per month, paid for 10 months of the year, plus a $500 book allowance (requiring summer internship during the student's first summer in the program)
  • Deadline: Feb 15, 2010. Harriet G. Jenkins Pre-doctoral Fellowship Program (JPFP). Intended for minorities and women.
    • Eligibility: Seniors
    • Minimum GPA: 3.0/4.0
    • Stipend: PhD - $14,000; MS - $10,000, PhD - 5 years; MS - 3 semesters
    • Stipend: $22,000 for PhD and $16,000 for MS. Annual tuition offsets are $8500 per year
  • Deadline: April 30, 2009 Google United Negro College Fund Scholarship. Intended for African American
    • Eligibility: Junior/Senior Student, Graduate Student. The program offers "last dollar" scholarships based upon unmet financial need for students
    • Minimum GPA: 3.5/4.0
    • Stipend: $10,000
Women Oriented

    • Eligibility: Be enrolled in a 4-year BA/BS program, entering sophomore year in Fall 2009

  • Deadline: May 1, 2009 Google FUSE
    • Eligibility: Be current full-time first year college students at a four year college in the US or Canada who will be full-time second year students in the 2009–2010 academic year.

Women Summer Programs or Travel Grants

  • Deadline: Dec 15, 2008. Google Workshop for Women Engineers (no US citizenship requirement)
    • Eligibility: a female computer science students currently enrolled in a Masters or PhD program at a university in the United States or Canada. Graduate students in any year of study are encouraged to apply.
    • Minimum GPA: 3.3/4.0 or 4.3/5.0

Department Nominations

  • Deadline: late Oct IBM PhD Fellowship (no US citizenship requirement)
    • Eligibility: Ph.D. students
  • Deadline: early Oct Microsoft PhD Fellowship (no US citizenship requirement)
    • Eligibility: Starting 2nd/3rd year in PhD program in the Fall semester of the year
