Site-Based Induction

Induction Purpose:
     * Establish a sense of school community that values professional dialogue and a common language to describe best practice
    * Link educators to a variety of support systems within the building and district
    * Guide the design and implementation of professional development that is responsive to the diverse needs of educators during their initial years 

What might it look like:

1) Site-based Induction Committees--
  • approx. 4-7 volunteers representing a cross-section of the staff
  • principal or assistant principal support/involvement
  • meets monthly (or as needed) to discuss building induction needs
  • committee members are encouraged to network and collaborate with resources outside the committee--e.g. department chairs, building reps, site-based specialists--to provide support beyond their expertise
  • committee defines and facilitates both individualized and group support for new-to-building/ASD educators
  • possible funding/resources for the committee through PTA/PTSA
  • possible release time provided through the school as needed and agreed upon

2) Point Person--
  • designated contact for TPD communication
  • committee facilitator

3)  Cross-District Induction Committee--
  • members:  Induction Committee Points and Principals
  • meet quarterly or at semester
  • discuss needs of Induction Committees district wide
  • promote communication with APA and building principals

4)  Collegial Cohort:  Induction--
  • AEA/ASD Collegial Cohort as tool promoted by the IC to address induction needs
    • HS/MS level--possible school-specific cohorts
    • Elem level--grade level/regional cohorts (eg. new to sped resource cohort, new to immersion, new to 3rd grade)
  • Cohort Facilitator as induction resource
  • Moodle networking

5) TPD supports:  
  • TPD contact personnel
  • website materials and resources (e.g.standards, templates, examples)
  • trainings:  Welcome Fair, NTI, NEO, ASDSA (specific induction topic course)


Site-Based Induction Standards:

Philosophy: The induction team describes their philosophy of induction and demonstrates its relationship to their practice.

Acculturation:  The induction team supports the immersion of the new employee in the school vision, mission, goals, and school community.

Survival:  The induction team assists in the new employees’ understanding of district and school procedures and introduces them to a variety of supporting program staff.

Learning Theory and Practice: The induction team understands how adults learn and applies that knowledge in their induction program.

Professional Development:  The induction team promotes professional development for building staff.

Diversity: The induction team uses knowledge of diversity when planning induction activities.

Mentoring: The induction team provides access to AEA/ASD Mentoring and Coaching Program to enhance professional growth and development.

Assessment: The induction team facilitates, monitors, and assesses the induction program.
