Juanilama’s agro-ecological community is located 8 kilometers from Santa Rosa de Pocosol in the San Carlos county. The rural community of Juanilama has approximately 100 inhabitants who benefit from dairy products (cheese making), farming of organic pineapple, and planting trees and roots.  The region’s climate is typically hot with afternoon showers creating excellent conditions for agricultural activities.

The Juanilama’s agro-ecological association was established in 2000 to promote authentic rural tourism of the northern plains of Costa Rica. The goal is to allow visitors to appreciate the tranquil setting of Juanilama’s rural community while sharing local customs and cultures. The Juanilama community offers the opportunity to learn, live, and experience the life of farmers, who are experts in different activities such as milking cattle, producing cheese, and tending crops.

The community of Juanilama is dedicated to providing the best experience by being exceptionally hospitable. Local inhabitants have constructed cabins for visitors, while the town market offers a selection of Costa Rica’s tastiest fruits and vegetables. Some popular activities are horseback riding, crafts making, hiking, bird watching and shopping.

The flora and fauna of Juanilama’s Ecological Reserve is a highlight for most visitors. This pristine rainforest is 25 hectares with an abundance of biodiversity to be observed. Principal tree species are Tamarindo de Montaña (Dialium guianense), Ceiba (Ceiba pentandra) and Guayabón surá (Terminalia oblonga). Additionally, deer, white face monkeys, mantle howler monkeys, pacas, agoutis, poison dart frogs, snakes, and a plethora of birds make up the wildlife. There are also hiking trails where you will see a wonderful waterfall with its gorgeous view and have the opportunity to swing under it into the Pocosol River if you are feeling bold.
