- A gate valve, also known as a sluice valve, is a valve that opens by lifting a round or rectangular gate/wedge out of the path of the fluid.

This valve works just like a spherical valve found in most faucets--a hollow inner sphere would rotate to open or close the penstock, allowing or shutting off the flow of water to the turbine. Wicket gates in the scroll casing would refine the flow to the turbines so that a constant 300 rpm was maintained, which produced 60Hz AC electricity.
Pumps
