"The measure of a man's real character is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out." Thomas B. Macaulay
Whether we are leading the charge, getting out the votes, coordinating that big project or, simply, privately, quietly, doing what we know is best instead of what we want to do, we are practicing leadership. Every one of us must take the lead at some time. And most of us must practice leadership every day.
"You do not lead by hitting people over the head - that's assault, not leadership"Dwight D. EisenhowerThe best leaders are life-long learners. First, they begin with the basics. What is it that is to be lead? Paperclips? Machinery? Soy plants? Leadership is always about people. More than that, it is always remembering that everyone is different. Solution A is a real humdinger-winner for Bobette, yet Darla is darned if she is going to lift a finger for it. Justin can barely contain his contempt for what has just been proposed, and Steve is chafing at the bit to get started. Why? We all differ in personality traits, cultural backgrounds and family upbringing to name a few distinctions. Despite all these variations, we all have some important qualities in common. We all want to be happy and we all want to be treated kindly.
"I must follow the people. Am I not their leader?"Benjamin DisraeliLeaders educate themselves on the differences and on the similarities. They learn that leadership is more about the people being lead than it is about the leader. They learn how to help others get what they want. They are familiar with goal-setting and accountability. In short, they learn everything they need to learn to serve others. At this site you will be offered an eclectic set of tools to use to sculpt your skills. Perhaps you need to tune your ear to be a better listener; recommendations are offered here. Maybe you want a taste of the different qualities that a leader must have. We serve-up a few sample plates. You could be at the point where you have made commitments to yourself and others that you will lead, and want some direction on where to start. We can help you get up and running.
