Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal, located in Agra, India, was completed in 1648 for the
emperor's favorite wife as a mausoleum. Today it is a very popular
tourist attraction for those visiting India.

Lighthouse at Alexandria

The Lighthouse at Alexandria was built on the island of Pharos in
Alexandria, Egypt. The lighthouse is considered one of the
Ancient Wonders of the World, and was destroyed by earthquakes in
1303 and 1323. The ruins were used to build Fort Qaitbey.

Hanging Gardens

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon are one of the Seven Wonders
of the World and were built by Nebuchadnezzar II near 600 BC.
Supposedly constructed for his wife, these gardens contained lush
plants to remind her of her home. They were eventually destroyed in
an earthquake.

Pyramid

The pyramids of Egypt are some of the largest structures ever built,
and the Great Pyramid at Giza is one of the Wonders of the World.
They were built out of huge blocks of stone and covered in a
limestone casing.

Synagogue

A synagogue is a house for Jewish worship. They come in a wide
variety of styles and shapes, but share many traditional layouts and
areas for the services.







Mosques

A mosque is the place for Islamic worship. Many mosques
incorporate similar architectural styles, such as the classic dome and
spire. They are often the center of Muslim communities.

Hagia Sophia

The Hagia Sophia, located in Istanbul, Turkey, was originally built
as a Christian basilica. After the fall of Constantinople, however, it
was converted into a mosque. Today it is used as a museum.


The Great Mosque of Samarra

This mosque is located in the city of Samarra, Iraq, and is famous for
its spiralling climb to the top. At one time, it was the largest mosque
in the world, but unfortunately in 2005, the top of the tower was
damaged by a bomb.


Obelisk

An obelisk is a tall, square, slanting pillar ending in a point. Obelisks
were a prominent part of Egyptian architecture, and were cut out of
stone. Today, obelisks can be found in many places such as the
Washington Monument and the Obelisk of Buenos Aires.
