Conclusion

During my research for my webproject in my History of Science class, I have seen strong connections between science and art. I found this unusually interesting because I am an art history major and I do know little about science. I enjoyed doing my episodes in order of the different time periods because I watched the evolution of science and art through the ages. During my research this semester, I was interested in the historical, scientific and religious context in which art is developed. However, I mainly focused on art in the scientific context. Learning the history of science was interesting because I got to see how science changed the world through the centuries and to see the many misconceptions were made about science. In the progress of my research, I found that while art and science seem to be very different disciplines, there were many connections between the two to explore. Perhaps one of the most important finding I had was that both art and science were studied by observing and recording nature. Another connection I made was with mathematics and perspective.  I discovered that with using scientific perspective, artists were able to compose visual art more realistically.

My three episodes were on Aristotle and the Greek sculpture in ancient time, medieval gothic architecture and Nicole Oresme and Durer and perspective drawing for the early modern time period. In my Episode I, I found out how Aristotle believed everything was universal and how science was related to the beauty of the human form.  Although most of their sculptures were idealized, Greek artists went to great lengths to study the human body.  Researching my Episode 2, I relieved that during the medieval times, gothic architecture was full of scientific details. The high dome ceiling reflected the astronomy and the beliefs of the philosophers and scientists. And finally in my Episode 3 , I found that Durer and his perspective drawing created a new standard for drawing and painting during the Renaissance through modern times. Durer’s work in geometry and mathematic greatly influenced and developed the principles of art.
