Nick Byrne - soloist in May 2000 & May 2007
Nick Byrne was born in Liverpool into a very musical family. Originally thinking it was a double bass, he started learning the cello from the age of 8 with Gethyn Jones of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. He won the Sir Thomas Beecham scholarship to study at Hull university and the Royal Academy of Music, London, being taught by David Strange, Colin Carr and winning the Andrew Brown performance prize. Nick then travelled to Canada to study the cello with Paul Marleyn at the University of Manitoba where he gained his Masters of Music degree and won the concerto competition. Whilst in Canada he made numerous recordings for CBC national radio in solo and chamber performances, specialising in first performances of contemporary compositions, aswell as performing with the Winnipeg Symphony and Manitoba Chamber orchestras. Nick returned to this side of the water two years ago, where he has been playing with the RLPO, RSNO, BBC Philharmonic and the Philharmonia orchestras. He records frequently with pop record labels as solo cello, with the Liverpool Session Orchestra and is currently the Artistic Director of the Williamson Art Gallery Summer Serenade concert series.
