Welcome!

Welcome to the Virginia Bluebird Society in Arlington, a Web site dedicated to bluebirds and other small cavity-nesting birds that are native to Arlington, Virginia.

This site provides information about bluebird conservation efforts and VBS nestbox trails (a.k.a. "bluebird trails") in Arlington County.

The Bluebirds are Back

Taylor Elementary 4th graders were thrilled to discover that the Eastern Bluebirds came back to their schoolyard again this year.  The bluebird nest is on the schoolyard's VBS nestbox trail near an open field, the bluebird's preferred habitat.  Funny enough, the bluebird choose a nestbox located in a small median of grass between the parking lot and the street.  Build it and they will come!

In this photo, the nestling is 3 days old.  The other eggs have not hatched and may not since they usually hatch within a 24-hour window.  One explanation may be that the eggs were not fertilized.  -June 3, 2009
