Mutter Marathon

The best kept running secret in SA
Malcolm will probably curse me for marketing this!

Greetings Fellow Trail Runners

It's time to MUTTER.   In the beautiful, lesser visited area of the southern KwaZulu-Natal/Lesotho Drakensberg where you won't even sniff tarmac let alone run on it.   This year we set off on Saturday 9 October for a scenic trail running challenge that will inspire you.   Please check this year's qualification criteria.   Full race information is attached.

Owing to safety and accommodation considerations numbers are limited.    Please book your accommodation early to ensure you get what you require.   The accommodation details are listed below for your convenience:
Friday 8 October and (Sunday night 10 October included):
Silverstreams, Bushman's Nek  contact Sannie 082 8598619 or  033 7011249   The race starts and finishes here.    (accommodation available: 5 x 4 person cabins and plenty of camping space);

Alternative for Friday/Sunday night is at Bushman's Nek Resort (4km on dirt road before start/finish).   Contact Kerilyn 031 7019999.

Saturday 9 October:  St Bernard's Peak Mountain Lodge contact  Ian or Cheri 039 7474313  (accommodation available: hotel rooms, rustic cabins and plenty of camping space).

Please don't expect:
  • seconding tables
  • dancing girls and cheer leaders
  • loud music
  • corporate banners and bunting
  • physio and vaseline tables
  • kilometre markers
  • TV coverage and press interviews
but what you will get is:
  • remote, wild, rarely traversed countryside
  • clear air, and champagne water from streams and springs
  • some snow on the Berg, perhaps
  • a glimpse of unusual flora and fauna
  • an opportunity to be your own unsung hero
  • the opportunity of participating in an event that is unashamedly non-commercial
  • comradeship of like-minded trail runners
  • an action-packed muttering weekend
how can I help:
  • keeping Saturday overnight gear to be taken to St Bernard's to a minimum;
  • offering to help cart gear to St Bernard's for the Saturday night if family are driving round;
  • by ensuring you are sufficiently trained and medically fit to run;
  • asssistance in any form especially re: sponsorship of lucky dips and/or t-shirts is always appreciated.
Thanks to all those who have showed such interest and passion in the MUTTER - that's why we do it.   Look forward to seeing you at the 7th MUTTER.

Yours in trail running
