North Central Envirothon
 
What is the Envirothon?
An outdoor learning event for students in grades 6-12
promoting natural resource involvement and education.
Grades 9-12 compete for a chance to attend the state envirothon.
Grades 6-8 compete in the junior envirothon.  P
articipating students
go to all of the same learning stations, but they do not give an oral presentation.

When did the national program start?
  • The Canon Envirothon program started in 1979 in Pennsylvania.
  • Districts sponsored the program as an outdoor hands-on competition.
  • Minnesota held its first Envirothon in 1993 with 100 students from the Twin Cities area participating.
  • The following year, several Soil and Water Conservation Districts throughout Minnesota organized area competitions.
  • By 1996, all Minnesota districts held area competitions. Now, up to 1,200 students participate throughout the state.
 
The North Central Envirothon includes schools from the following counties:
    Beltrami, Cass, Clearwater, Crow Wing, Hubbard, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake of the Woods, and Wadena.
 
                                          

How can my school get involved?
  • Contact your local Soil and Water Conservation District (see Contacts Page) and tell them that you are interested in forming a team or teams.
  • Organize your team(s).
  • Obtain study materials from your Area Envirothon coordinator.
  • Plan your training sessions and meet as often as possible.
  • Consider contacting local experts to help train your team(s).
  • Practice oral presentations.
  • Participate in your local or state competition. And HAVE FUN!
