It's Fall... eye to compound eye with a fading Julia
Explore Oct 21, 2011 #41 It's Fall and the Julias are fading. You can see where the pigment has been brushed away in the course of feeding and mating. This one has her wings intact but many now have chunks of their wings missing here and there. Be sure to notice the straw-like proboscis through which this butterfly is sipping a bit of water. I love the checker-board compound eye, the bright orange legs and black antennae with bright orange sensory clubs at their tips. Dryas iulia (often incorrectly spelled julia), commonly called the Julia Butterfly or Julia Heliconian, is a species of brush-footed butterfly. The male is bright orange. The forewing is elongated with black spots toward apex. Females dull orange. Their forewings are elongate with a black bar across the apex. The hindwing of both sexes has a narrow black margin. The ventral hindwing is light orange-brown with a pale band through the center. Julias are common in forest margins, open woodlands, shrubby sites, gardens, parks in Brevard, Broward, Charlotte, Hendry, Indian River, Lee, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Palm Beach, Sarasota, St. Lucie, and here at Arch Creek East. The Julia's eggs are yellow and laid singly on host leaves. The nature larva is brown with white spots and numerous black branched spines. The chrysalis is brown with a few silver markings. Larval host plants include corky-stemmed passion flower (Passiflora suberosa) and the many flowered passion flower (Passiflora multiflora) This butterfly is a fast flier and feeds on the nectar of flowers such as lantanas (Lantana) and Shepherd's-needle (Scandix pecten-veneris). Its caterpillars feed are on leaves of passion vines including Passiflora affinis and Yellow Passionflower (P. lutea) in Texas. LIke the Gulf Fritillary, the Julia is a brush-footed butterfly. Julias are found with Gulf Fritillaries and Zebra Longwings. Julia, Dryas iulia Nymphalidae/Brush-Footed Butterflies See my sets, Woods, weeds and streams. And Lubbers, Butterflies and Bees.
