Vigeland DDS, 88, of Rugby, North Dakota, died at Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby on Monday, November 26, 2007. He was born on February 13, 1919, in Brinsmade, North Dakota, the son of Dr. Jorg G. and Birgitte (Muus) Vigeland. Harold graduated from Brinsmade High School and received a Bachelor’s Degree in 1941 from St. Olaf College, founded by his great-grandfather, Rev. B.J. Muus. He entered the University of Minnesota Dental School in 1941 and enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserves in 1943. He was discharged in 1944 and graduated from dental school in 1945. He married Jean Adeline Howe on September 1, 1945, in Minneapolis. The couple moved to Rugby and Dr. Vigeland set up his practice above the former Jacobson Building. In June 1952, Dr. Vigeland enlisted into the U.S. Army as a captain and then accepted a transfer to the Air Force. He graduated from the School of Aviation Medicine in Montgomery, Alabama, and was sent overseas, serving with the Korean-based 474th Medical Group in Japan. After his discharge in 1954 he returned to Rugby to practice his beloved profession as a dentist over the former Senger Variety Store and in 1972 he built his own office at 519 2nd Ave. SW. He provided dental care to the region for more than 55 years until his retirement in 2000. He truly enjoyed his work and was known far and wide as a thoughtful, kind, humble and gentle man in both his professional and personal life. Through the years, Dr. Vigeland, affectionately known as “Doc,” was active in his community. He was regional president of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and taught Sunday school at First Lutheran Church in Rugby for 21 years. Harold was a former trustee of the North Dakota Dental Association, a member of the Red Cross, American Field Service, Devils Lake District Health Unit, the Clarence Larson Post #23 American Legion, and the Boy Scouts of America. He had been a member of the Rugby Lions Club for 61 years and was particularly proud of the honor of being named a Melvin Jones Fellow, the highest award given from the International Association of Lions Clubs, in 1999. He served as club president in 1975-76. He will be remembered for his support of the arts and music in the region, and his steadfast loyalty to Rugby and the state of North Dakota. He enjoyed traveling, reading and working at home on his lawn and flowers. His dedication to his wife, Jean, and to his two sons and his grandchildren will be long remembered. Dr. Vigeland is survived by: his wife of 62 years, Jean, who resides at the Long Term Care Unit at the Heart of America Medical Center; their children, David and his wife, Marybeth Vigeland, Grand Forks; and John and his wife, Suzanne Vigeland, Green Bay, Wisconsin; two grandchildren, Taylor of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Chad of Green Bay; and four stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Dr. George N. Vigeland, who practiced at the Johnson Clinic in Rugby from 1950-1960 before moving to Oregon. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2007 at 2 p.m. at First Lutheran Church in Rugby. Visitation will be on Friday from 3 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will take place at a later time in the family plot at the Holden Cemetery in Kenyon, Minnesota. (Niewoehner Funeral Home, Rugby) Jean Adeline Vigeland Jean Adeline Vigeland, 87, of Rugby, North Dakota, died at Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby on February 17 , 2008. Jean was born on February 14, 1921 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the daughter of Charles and Ellen (Moen) Howe. She graduated from Minneapolis Central High School and attended Burroughs College and the University of Minnesota. She was a training director in the Personnel Department of Montgomery Ward, St. Paul, Minnesota, until her marriage to Dr. Harold H. Vigeland on September 1, 1945. She then moved to Rugby where Dr. Vigeland practiced dentistry until his retirement in 2000. Jean was Doc's dental assistant for several years and had done their bookwork during all their time in Rugby. Jean was an active member of First Lutheran Church in Rugby, serving as a Sunday School teacher for many years, as an officer of the A.L.C.W. and on various committees and youth organizations. She was a charter member and officer of the Good Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary and a member of many community organizations, including the Rugby Literary Club, Sewing Club, P.T.A., American Field Service, Cancer Society and afternoon bowling league. Dr. David Snodgrass
Dr. David Snodgrass has practiced dentistry in Nashville since 1987. Receiving his DDS degree from the University of Tennessee in 1984 and his certificate in pediatric dentistry from the Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1986, he is currently a part-time assistant clinical professor of pediatric dentistry at Vanderbilt University. Having published numerous articles on growth and development in several orthodontic and pediatric dental journals, Dr. Snodgrass is a recognized lecturer and mentor to many orthodontic study clubs in the southeastern United States. His awards include the Achievement, Fellowship, and Diplomat Awards from the American Orthodontic Society and the International Association of Orthodontics. He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Orthodontic Society, the International Association of Orthodontics, and the Tennessee Dental Association. He, his wife Melody and their children reside in Brentwood.
