Arch 384, the second year undergraduate studio, focus on ecologically sustainable design. Students will design a building that suits its site in terms of urban context, aesthetics, topography and climate. The class will examine how to integrate daylighting, solar energy and natural ventilation with other design considerations. We will carefully study the building’s user needs to organize program relationships and examine the social context to create a building for its larger community. We will address how a multistory building’s circulation can meet egress rules for life-safety and universal access guidelines.
In four coordinated sections, instructors will coach students in understanding the site and program constraints, finding an appropriate design concept and developing the design. Students will document their process, reflect on their progress and receive feedback via electronic portfolios.
