What It Is All About Members of the Austin rowing community will be participating in an Erg (rowing on an indoor machine) Challenge between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The goal is for each rower to erg 100-200km or for a team of rowers to erg 250-500km between the holidays. ARC again this year, in conjunction with the program has selected a local charity, Food In Tummies, for which to raise money. This program's goal is to make sure that children are being fed on the weekend. See below for more information on the Food In Tummies program.
How You Can Help!
You can pledge an amount to donate to FIT based on the number of km completed by an individual. For example you can pledge $.25/km which would mean a donation of $25 if someone did 100km.
To make a pledge go to the Make A Pledge page, choose a rower to sponsor and put in the amount you would like to pledge per kilometer. You can track an individual rowers progress by going to Kilometers Erged page. The total amount the club has erged to date is also tracked.
Once the challenge has been completed you will receive an email detailing the amount owed. Donations should be made directly to FIT. You can make a donation either through the web or by check. Please see the Make A Donation page for more details.
About Food In Tummies (FIT)
FIT is a program designed to provide weekend nourishment to children grades K-5 who qualify for the National Student Lunch Program (NSLP). Food In Tummies, which is managed by The Junior League of Austin in collaboration with the Del Valle Independent School District, aims to help these hungry children by delivering backpacks of nutritious food each week to a Title 1 elementary school during the 2010-2011 school year.
Now in its second year, the FIT Program benefits the entire student population of Baty Elementary within the Del Valle ISD (which currently enrolls 952 students). Even though many schools within Austin Independent School District report one in two students are eligible for the NSLP, Baty Elementary reports that approximately 96 percent of enrolled students are considered economically disadvantaged and are currently enrolled in this program. These children will receive packs full of healthy food along with bilingual nutrition and fitness tips every week for 32 weeks during the 2010-2011 school year.
