painting the bench each year our local arts association has a fundraising auction at the library. The association gets half the money from each item (which they use for scholarships) and the artist gets the other half. Seems like a win-win situation to me - great way to encourage arts and artists. This year it's wood benches we get to decorate. This picture is from a week ago. I invited my friend Gayle and her kids to help with my bench, before I thought about how seven kids could possibly paint one bench together (her eldest was out skiing, if anybody's counting!) Our final solution was to make the bench a giant checkerboard - or quilt - with each child contributing a square. Then Gayle's inspiration was to make every other square a plain color - much nicer on the eyes, and easier too. Here the plain squares are covered by origami paper - that's how we tested Gayle's idea, and we loved it! The colors I ended up painting the plain squares are quite a bit drabber, because it let the kids' art really shine. I still haven't figured out how to 'finish' the edges between the squares though.... more pictures later - my eldest two and I worked some more on the bench today. But I was so busy taking pictures of the kids, and close-ups of their squares, I didn't take any good ones of the bench! Nature's Walk
Soothing brisk of green beam, offering serenity and peace, with bursting glances of love, joy, hope, and kindness. Promising laughter.
